Based on our analysis of published reviews, test drives of the Acura MDX, reliability and safety data, the 2014 Acura MDX ranks 2 out of 19 Luxury Midsize SUVs. It is actually the global concept car for a small SUV developed for the Chinese market. Undoubtedly, this is the first time for the company to reveal the world debut of a concept model outside of North America. The stylish look and driving performance, the environmental performance of a small car and perfect utility of an SUV are all put together at a high level in this car.

Trim Levels

2014 Acrua MDX comes in a single trim level with good add-on packages.

Exterior and Interior

The new MDX might be deemed to be a smoother and less muscular style of the previous model. But behind those powerful “Jewel Eye” headlamps, this is a substantially improved combination of the two different styles. The exterior design of the 2014 Acura MDX is much similar with Acura NSX. For example, this car has similar slit-like LED headlight configuration as that of an NSX concept car. Further, it has been positioned a bit too higher than usual. Under the lights, there is swooping contoured design which makes the headlights look bigger. The front bumper has huge air intakes with fog lights. Moreover, the rear end of the MDX is apparently less ostentatious looking at the front. There is the toned down style of Acura’s beak grille, headlights that includes the jeweled LED parts of RLX and MDX. The MDX is similar inside window shape as the MDX and RDX.

2014 Acura MDX

The MDX’s cabin has a clean design and is well-assembled with expensive materials. The 2014 MDX has seven seats, and is one of rare luxury midsize SUVs having three rows of seats. The second and third rows are quite low to the floor.  Also, the third row is not much more spacious, though it is a general negative for the class. In the MDX’s center stack, a standard touch screen takes place of a lot of buttons after redesigning. Critics appreciate it because of its easier utility comparing to those lots of buttons on the previous model. Other quality features are tri-zone automatic climate control, an eight-speaker stereo with satellite radio and USB/auxiliary ports, Bluetooth and a multi-view backup camera. Available features are a 10-speaker stereo with a 15-gigabyte media storage drive and HD Radio, adaptive cruise control and navigation with voice recognition.

Safety Features

Next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ II (ACE™ II) body structure, 4-wheel Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Assist, Traction Control and Airbags are standard safety features.

Under the Hood

The 2014 Acura MDX is powered by a V6 engine that, experts say, makes extra power. Power is provided through a six-speed automatic transmission, and most experts say it shifts very smoothly. It has an estimated EPA up to 20/28 mpg city/highway and gets better fuel economy than most of its rivals. Reviewers generally praise the MDX’s suspension, and say it has a good balance between ride and handling. Critics also say that the steering feels accurate and well-weighted. However, the brakes are criticized for not being very strong and having a spongy pedal feel. Estimated acceleration from 0-60 mph is 6.1 to 6.3 seconds.
